长期以来，在互联网业务占据主导地位的前提下，谷歌发展了各种看起来与核心业务关系不大、又存在高风险的部门，例如无人驾驶汽车、气球网络项目、可以监测血糖的隐形眼镜等项目。在新Alphabet的架构下，这些业务将纷纷脱离谷歌，成为Alphabet旗下的独立子公司。
佩奇在博客中写道：“从根本上说，我们相信这可以让我们有更大的管理规模，我们因此可以独立运行更多不紧密相关的事。”
【为何叫“字母表”】
新的控股公司为何取名Alphabet？佩奇解释说，Alphabet是语言文字字母的集合，而语言是人类最为重要的创新，也是谷歌搜索的索引核心。同时，Alpha也有投资回报的意思，他表示会尽力给投资者带来回报。
